How to let customers change their pickup point after ordering

Allow customers to pick a different pickup point on the Thank you page or the Order status page for a limited time after the order.

Customers sometimes realise right after checkout that they picked the wrong pickup point. With this setting they can fix it themselves on the Thank you page or the Order status page, for a time limit you choose and only until the shipping label exists.

Before you start

  • You need a paid plan. On the Free plan the setting is locked.

  • The setting is off by default.

  • It works for orders delivered to a pickup point that the customer picked in the ShipDock widget.

Set it up

  1. In ShipDock, open Settings → Widget (Pickup points).

  2. Scroll to the Change of pickup point after ordering card.

  3. Turn on Allow customers to change the pickup point after ordering.

  4. In Change allowed for … minutes after the order is placed, enter the time limit in minutes. You can use 5 to 1440 minutes (24 hours). The default is 60 minutes and it applies to all couriers.

  5. Choose where the customer can make the change: On the Thank-you page, On the Order status page, or both. Both pages are on by default, so untick the one you don't want.

  6. Save the settings.

Note: If a courier creates the shipping label automatically when the order is placed, the card shows a banner with that courier's name. Customers cannot change the pickup point for those orders, because the label already exists a moment after checkout. To allow changes, switch that courier's automatic label creation to when the order is fulfilled, or turn it off.

What your customers see

Below the selected pickup point, the customer sees a Change pickup point button and the message You can change the pickup point until [time].

  1. The customer clicks Change pickup point.

  2. The list and map open right below the current pickup point.

  3. The customer picks a new point. It is saved straight away and the order in Shopify is updated.

Note: The Select from map button needs a Google Maps key in Settings → Widget (Pickup points) → Google Map APIs. Without it, customers pick the new point from the list. On stores without Shopify Plus, that card is shown only when Display mode (TY / OS page) is List with Map. See How to get a Google Maps API key for the pickup point map.

When the change is no longer possible, the button disappears and the customer sees The pickup point can no longer be changed. If the label has already been created, the message says The pickup point can no longer be changed, the parcel is already being prepared.

When the change is locked

The customer can no longer change the pickup point when any of these is true:

  • The time limit you set has passed. The time counts from when the order was placed.

  • A shipping label has been created for the order.

  • The order is fulfilled or cancelled.

  • The order's courier creates labels automatically when an order is placed.

  • The customer chose the pickup point as one of the nearest pickup points shipping rates. That pickup point is part of the shipping option they paid for, so it cannot be swapped.

If the customer has the page open when the time runs out, saving is refused and the page shows that the pickup point can no longer be changed.

Tip: Customers who did not pick a pickup point at all can still pick one at any time. The time limit only applies to changing a point that is already selected.

Change the pickup point yourself

You can always change the pickup point for a customer in ShipDock, for example when they email you after the time limit:

  1. Open Orders in ShipDock.

  2. In the order row, click the pickup point in the shipping column.

  3. In the Change pickup point window, search for and select the new point, then save.

Note: Changing the pickup point does not update a label that already exists. The parcel stays registered with the courier for the original point, so create the shipment again with the new point (and cancel the old one with the courier).
